On Dec. 10, five new members were sworn in to serve four-year terms on the School Board of the City of Virginia Beach starting in 2025. The new members are as follows:

School Board Vacancy
Notice Regarding School Board Vacancy, Application Process and Public Hearing Date
The School Board of the City of Virginia Beach will appoint an interim School Board Member District 4 to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Staci R. Martin on February 13, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. The person appointed will serve until a School Board Member District 4 is elected at and qualified after the November 5, 2024 special election. To be eligible for appointment, a citizen must be a qualified voter and bona fide resident of District 4 of the City of Virginia Beach and meet all other requirements set by law.
The School Board invites interested citizens to submit the application form that includes: reasons for interest in School Board service; summary of work experience and public/community service; educational background; past volunteer experience or employment with Virginia Beach City Public Schools or other school systems; evidence of residence and voter registration; and additional qualifications for the position. Applications must be received no later than 3:00 p.m. on March 4, 2024 in the office of Regina Toneatto, Clerk of the School Board, P.O. Box 6038, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23456-0038. The application form is available in the Clerk’s Office or you may download it here.
On March 12, 2024 at 6:00 p.m., or thereafter, the School Board will hold a public hearing to receive public comments regarding this appointment. The public hearing will be held at the School Administration Building 2512 George Mason Drive, Building 6, Virginia Beach. Any citizen who desires to speak at this hearing should contact the Clerk of the School Board at 263-1016. The School Board will make an appointment no later than March 30, 2024.
Important dates for applicants for appointment as the Interim School Board Member for District 4 include:
| March 4, 2024 | Applications are due no later than 3:00 pm. Late applications will not be considered. |
| March 7, 2024 | Names of applicants will be publicly posted and included in the School Board Agenda package |
| March 12, 2024 | Public Hearing on applicants. Applicants are strongly encouraged to sign up to speak at the public hearing on their behalf. The School Board will hold a Closed Session during the March 12th meeting to choose applicants to interview. Applicants will be notified within forty-eight hours of the School Board’s choice of applicants to be interviewed. |
| March 26, 2024 | School Board will interview chosen applicants in Open Session. The School Board will vote in Open Session to appoint the Interim School Board Member District 4. |
| March 27, 2024 | Swearing In Ceremony for Interim School Board Member and Orientation. |
| November 2024 | Interim School Board Member – District 4 will complete term of service upon the election and qualification of a new School Board Member District 4 after the November 5, 2024 special election. |
