VBCPS students outperform state on SOL tests

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) released Standard of Learning (SOL) pass rate data on Aug. 27. The overall SOL pass rates for Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) exceeded the state pass rates in all subject areas.

Virginia Beach City Public Schools Music Education Program Receives National Recognition for 16th Year

For the 16th time, Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation. Now in its 26th year, the Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement for providing music access and education to all students.

2025 Citywide Volunteers of the Year

Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) values and promotes active engagement of the community in all our schools. The Office of Family and Community Engagement coordinates many volunteer opportunities for community members to interact and contribute to the academic achievement of our students and the overall continuous improvement of VBCPS.

2025-26 federal grant information presented to Virginia Beach School Board

The Virginia Beach School Board received information about proposed federal grant applications at its May 13 meeting. For the 2025-26 school year, Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) would receive approximately $21.6 million in formula grant funds through programs authorized under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA).

Student Rights and Responsibilities

  1. Students' Right to an Education
    1. The Commonwealth of Virginia, as provided for in Article VIII of the Constitution of Virginia, has established and must maintain a public school system. Except as specifically provided for in relevant chapters of the Code of Virginia, all residents of the School Division, between the ages of five and twenty are entitled to attend the public schools without charge.
    2. All students, irrespective of color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions, age, marital status, disability, genetic information, or veteran status are entitled to the same courses of education and use of facilities in the schools.
  2. General Responsibility of Students When Asserting a Right to an Education
    1. Along with the right to equality of educational opportunity, students have two responsibilities:
      1. To apply themselves to the best of their ability to gain maximum benefit from the educational opportunities guaranteed to citizens, and
      2. To act in such a way as not to interfere with the rights of others to the same opportunity.
    2. Reasonable and necessary order in the educational institution itself is essential to the fostering and maintaining of educational opportunity. Students may forfeit their rights to educational opportunities when their conduct is such that it substantially disrupts the educational process and deprives others of their rights.
