VBCPS students outperform state on SOL tests

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) released Standard of Learning (SOL) pass rate data on Aug. 27. The overall SOL pass rates for Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) exceeded the state pass rates in all subject areas.

Virginia Beach City Public Schools Music Education Program Receives National Recognition for 16th Year

For the 16th time, Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation. Now in its 26th year, the Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement for providing music access and education to all students.

2025 Citywide Volunteers of the Year

Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) values and promotes active engagement of the community in all our schools. The Office of Family and Community Engagement coordinates many volunteer opportunities for community members to interact and contribute to the academic achievement of our students and the overall continuous improvement of VBCPS.

2025-26 federal grant information presented to Virginia Beach School Board

The Virginia Beach School Board received information about proposed federal grant applications at its May 13 meeting. For the 2025-26 school year, Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) would receive approximately $21.6 million in formula grant funds through programs authorized under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA).

Student Placement

  1. Elementary Schools
    1. Transfer Students

      Students who transfer from other elementary schools within the School Division shall be placed in the grade which has been recommended by the previous school.

      The Superintendent shall develop procedures for the placement of transfer students from outside the Division.

    2. Placement of Twins or Multiple Siblings

      The parent/ legal guardian of twins or higher multiple siblings in the same grade level may request that these children be placed in the same classroom or in a separate classroom if they are at the same elementary school.

      1. Schools may recommend classroom placement to the parent/legal guardian.
      2. Schools must provide the placement requested by the children’s parent/legal guardian, unless the Division Superintendent or designee makes a classroom placement determination following the school principal’s request in accordance with this subsection.
      3. A parent/legal guardian must request the classroom placement to the building principal in writing no later than 3 days after the first day of each school year or 3 days after the first day of attendance of the children during a school year.
      4. At the end of the initial grading period, if the school principal or designee, in consultation with the children's classroom teacher, determines that the requested classroom placement is disruptive to the school or is harmful to the children’s educational progress, the school principal or designee may request that the Division Superintendent or designee determine the children's classroom placement.
  2. Secondary Schools

    Students who transfer from other secondary schools within the School Division shall be placed in a level best reflecting their earned units of credit, regulations for promotion and graduation requirements as established by the School Board.

    The Superintendent or designee shall establish procedures for evaluating transcripts of transfer students and for awarding credits.
