At its Jan. 14 meeting, the School Board of the City of Virginia Beach elected Kathleen Brown as chair and Carolyn Weems as vice chair. Brown has served on the School Board for two years and Weems for 22 years.
Lalisha Fitchett, an English teacher at Brandon Middle School, is the 2026 Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) Citywide Teacher of the Year. Superintendent Dr. Donald E. Robertson Jr. made the announcement during a surprise visit to Brandon Middle on Dec. 19.

Based on data from 2023-2024, all but one school in Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) earned state accreditation for 2024-2025, following today’s release of school quality profiles data from the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE).
The Virginia Beach City Public Schools’ Building Utilization Committee (BUC) has developed a proposal recommending zoning changes for Point O’View Elementary School.
Green Run Collegiate (GRC) has been named a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education, receiving the distinction of Exemplary High Performing School.

STUDENTS
Discipline and Control of Students
The discipline and control of students shall be the responsibility of the principal, the administrators, the teachers, bus drivers and other supervising staff.
The use of group punishment in the School Division is not endorsed by the School Board, and its use is strongly discouraged.
The adult student, parent or legal guardian of a minor student will be notified in advance of the detention. Students in detention must be attended by a teacher, administrator, or teacher assistant. Students may be detained before or after school hours or on Saturday.
The Superintendent shall see that all employees of the School Board adhere to the Code of Virginia § 22.1-279.1, as amended. Employees shall also be informed that the School Board demands compliance with both the word and the intent of the law.
