At its Jan. 14 meeting, the School Board of the City of Virginia Beach elected Kathleen Brown as chair and Carolyn Weems as vice chair. Brown has served on the School Board for two years and Weems for 22 years.
Lalisha Fitchett, an English teacher at Brandon Middle School, is the 2026 Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) Citywide Teacher of the Year. Superintendent Dr. Donald E. Robertson Jr. made the announcement during a surprise visit to Brandon Middle on Dec. 19.

Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) has continued to maintain record levels with respect to the On-Time Graduation (OTG) rate, which stands at 96.1% for the 2024 cohort year, and dropout rate of 2.1%. VBCPS also outperformed Virginia's rates of 92.8% for OTG and 4.5% for dropouts.

Based on data from 2023-2024, all but one school in Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) earned state accreditation for 2024-2025, following today’s release of school quality profiles data from the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE).
The Virginia Beach City Public Schools’ Building Utilization Committee (BUC) has developed a proposal recommending zoning changes for Point O’View Elementary School.
Green Run Collegiate (GRC) has been named a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education, receiving the distinction of Exemplary High Performing School.

STUDENTS
Indigent Students
Indigent students are entitled to the school services available to meet their needs. Principals and teachers are to use all resources available for the welfare of indigent students through the department of welfare, civic clubs, religious organizations, military, service organizations, partner organizations, businesses, other governmental agencies, and parent-teacher associations.
The School Board will provide free textbooks to all students.
Free and reduced-price lunches will be provided to those students who qualify under state and federal regulations.
