At its Jan. 14 meeting, the School Board of the City of Virginia Beach elected Kathleen Brown as chair and Carolyn Weems as vice chair. Brown has served on the School Board for two years and Weems for 22 years.
Lalisha Fitchett, an English teacher at Brandon Middle School, is the 2026 Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) Citywide Teacher of the Year. Superintendent Dr. Donald E. Robertson Jr. made the announcement during a surprise visit to Brandon Middle on Dec. 19.

Based on data from 2023-2024, all but one school in Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) earned state accreditation for 2024-2025, following today’s release of school quality profiles data from the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE).
The Virginia Beach City Public Schools’ Building Utilization Committee (BUC) has developed a proposal recommending zoning changes for Point O’View Elementary School.
Green Run Collegiate (GRC) has been named a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education, receiving the distinction of Exemplary High Performing School.

STUDENTS
Age of Entrance/Kindergarten
No child who has not reached their fifth birthday on or before September 30 of the school year shall be eligible for enrollment in kindergarten. All students transferring into the School Division who have already been attending Kindergarten in an out of state school division will be allowed to enroll in Kindergarten under the same standards for Kindergarten enrollment set forth in the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children and applicable state law regarding children of certain federal employees.
