VBCPS students outperform state on SOL tests

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) released Standard of Learning (SOL) pass rate data on Aug. 27. The overall SOL pass rates for Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) exceeded the state pass rates in all subject areas.

Virginia Beach City Public Schools Music Education Program Receives National Recognition for 16th Year

For the 16th time, Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation. Now in its 26th year, the Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement for providing music access and education to all students.

2025 Citywide Volunteers of the Year

Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) values and promotes active engagement of the community in all our schools. The Office of Family and Community Engagement coordinates many volunteer opportunities for community members to interact and contribute to the academic achievement of our students and the overall continuous improvement of VBCPS.

2025-26 federal grant information presented to Virginia Beach School Board

The Virginia Beach School Board received information about proposed federal grant applications at its May 13 meeting. For the 2025-26 school year, Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) would receive approximately $21.6 million in formula grant funds through programs authorized under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA).

INSTRUCTION

School Hours

  1. Elementary School Hours
    1. Kindergarten
      1. The school hours for kindergarten students enrolled in a school without a full-day kindergarten program are as follows:
        1. "A schools":

          Morning Kindergarten: 8:05 a.m. - 11:15 a.m.; or
          Afternoon Kindergarten: 11:25 a.m. - 2:35 p.m.

        2. "B schools":

          Morning Kindergarten: 8:45 a.m. - 11:55 a.m.; or
          Afternoon Kindergarten: 12:05 p.m. - 3:15 p.m.

      2. The school hours for kindergarten students enrolled in a school with a full-day kindergarten program are the same hours as those listed in this regulation for students in Grades 1-5.
      3. The school hours for kindergarten students enrolled at the Bayside Tri-Campus are 8:40 a.m. - 3:10 p.m.
    2. Grades 1-5
      1. The school hours for students in grades 1-5, except those students enrolled at the Old Donation Center or the Bayside Tri-Campus, are as follows:
        1. "A schools" are in session from 8:05 a.m. - 2:35 p.m.
        2. "B schools" are in session 8:45 a.m. - 3:15 p.m.
      2. Old Donation School students attend the center from 8:40 a.m. - 3:44 p.m.
      3. Bayside Tri-Campus students in grades 1-3 attend school from 8:45 a.m. - 3:15 p.m. and students in grades 4-5 attend school from 8:05 a.m. - 2:35 p.m.
  2. Middle School Hours

    The school hours for middle school students are 9:25 a.m. - 4:05 p.m., except that Old Donation School students attend school from 8:40 a.m. - 3:44 p.m. and Bayside 6th Grade Campus students attend school from 9:00 a.m. -3:40 p.m.

  3. High School Hours

    The school hours for high school students are 7:20 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. The school hours for the Technical and Career Education Center and the Advanced Technology Center are 7:40 a.m. - 1:40 p.m.

  4. Exceptions

    This regulation shall be superseded by any changes to hours approved by the School Board during each school year and/or any adjustments to school hours approved by the Superintendent or designee due to unforeseen or emergency circumstances.
