INSTRUCTION
Gifted Programs
- Purpose
It is the policy of the School Board to actively promote and develop a qualitatively differentiated educational program for gifted learners in order to facilitate the fullest development of their potential. The program shall be in compliance with the Standards of Quality as prescribed by the General Assembly, the Virginia Board of Education Regulations Establishing Standards for Accrediting Public Schools in Virginia and The Virginia Plan for the Gifted approved by the Virginia Board of Education.
- Program Goals
- To develop an understanding of the characteristics which distinguish gifted and talented students from the general school population.
- To implement the Code of Virginia and the Board of Education Regulations Governing Educational Services for Gifted Students, including but not limited to the use of multiple criteria to identify gifted students.
- To provide continuous staff development for administrators, teachers and resource personnel.
- To provide educational programs which will enable each gifted learner to develop his or her abilities to their fullest potential.
- To provide for continuous formative and summative evaluation of the program for the gifted learner.
- To improve awareness and understanding of the gifted program among school personnel, parents, and other community members.
- To develop a long-range division-wide plan for the future of gifted and talented education.
- To ensure that each school provides students identified as gifted with instructional programs taught by teachers with special training or experience in working with gifted students.
- Local Plan for Gifted Education
- The Local Plan for Gifted Education (Local Plan), required by state law and Board of Education Regulations, shall be developed by the Superintendent and submitted to the School Board for approval before it is submitted to the Virginia Department of Education.
- The Superintendent shall prepare and submit the annual report, "Program for Gifted Education, as required by Board of Education Regulations and, upon approval and direction of the School Board, forward the annual report to the Virginia Department of Education.
