VBCPS students outperform state on SOL tests

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) released Standard of Learning (SOL) pass rate data on Aug. 27. The overall SOL pass rates for Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) exceeded the state pass rates in all subject areas.

Virginia Beach City Public Schools Music Education Program Receives National Recognition for 16th Year

For the 16th time, Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation. Now in its 26th year, the Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement for providing music access and education to all students.

2025 Citywide Volunteers of the Year

Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) values and promotes active engagement of the community in all our schools. The Office of Family and Community Engagement coordinates many volunteer opportunities for community members to interact and contribute to the academic achievement of our students and the overall continuous improvement of VBCPS.

2025-26 federal grant information presented to Virginia Beach School Board

The Virginia Beach School Board received information about proposed federal grant applications at its May 13 meeting. For the 2025-26 school year, Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) would receive approximately $21.6 million in formula grant funds through programs authorized under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA).

COMMUNITY RELATIONS

Special Education Advisory Committee

A Special Education Advisory Committee shall be activated by the School Board as mandated in the legal reference of this Regulation.

  1. Purpose

    The local advisory committee for special education will be appointed by the School Board and shall advise the School Board, through the Superintendent, regarding the local annual plan for the education of students with disabilities as well as other matters related to the education of students with disabilities.

  2. Duties

    The duties and responsibilities of the Committee shall be to:

    1. Review annually the local plan for the education of students with disabilities, including revisions;
    2. Determine the extent to which the local plan for the previous year was implemented;
    3. Participate in the development of priorities and strategies for meeting the identified needs of children with disabilities;
    4. Represent the community;
    5. Encourage a collaborative relationship between School Division staff and the community;
    6. Become knowledgeable about current programs, research, and best practices in special education and its relationship with general education;
    7. Focus attention on issues relative to improving the educational services for special education students; and
    8. Submit recommendations of the Committee in writing to the Superintendent and the School Board.
  3. Members/Terms of Office/Appointment/Representation
    1. The citizen membership on the Committee will be appointed by the School Board in accordance with School Board policy and regulation and state law and regulation. The Superintendent or designee will appoint staff members to serve on or assist the Committee in its work. The Superintendent or designee reserves the right to remove a staff member from such appointment with or without cause and staff members removed will have no right to appeal such removal.
    2. The membership will be three (3) years.
    3. Voting membership of the Committee will include members representing parents/legal guardians of special education students, community representatives, and related agency and business leaders.
  4. Operating Procedures/Officers
    1. The Committee shall maintain current bylaws and standing rules to govern the operation of the Committee.
      1. The Committee shall develop a calendar for regular meetings which includes at least four meetings per year.
      2. Officers shall be elected by the voting members according to procedures established in the Committee's bylaws.
  5. Reports
    1. The Committee shall present written recommendations to the School Board and Superintendent.
    2. Reports shall be made to the Virginia Department of Education as required and requested.
