VBCPS students outperform state on SOL tests

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) released Standard of Learning (SOL) pass rate data on Aug. 27. The overall SOL pass rates for Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) exceeded the state pass rates in all subject areas.

Virginia Beach City Public Schools Music Education Program Receives National Recognition for 16th Year

For the 16th time, Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation. Now in its 26th year, the Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement for providing music access and education to all students.

2025 Citywide Volunteers of the Year

Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) values and promotes active engagement of the community in all our schools. The Office of Family and Community Engagement coordinates many volunteer opportunities for community members to interact and contribute to the academic achievement of our students and the overall continuous improvement of VBCPS.

2025-26 federal grant information presented to Virginia Beach School Board

The Virginia Beach School Board received information about proposed federal grant applications at its May 13 meeting. For the 2025-26 school year, Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) would receive approximately $21.6 million in formula grant funds through programs authorized under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA).

COMMUNITY RELATIONS

General Advisory Committee for Technical and Career Education

Under the School Board's Policy and supporting regulation for Citizens' Advisory Committees, a community-staff general advisory council for Technical and Career Education shall be activated.

  1. Duties and Responsibilities

    The duties and responsibilities of the general advisory committee shall be to:

    1. Develop methods by which council members may most effectively function as channels of communication between the schools and the total community;
    2. Influence the expansion and quality of technical and career education programs in the schools;
    3. Provide liaison service that unifies the educational program of the schools toward meeting universal and common technical and career education needs of students, industry, and the community;
    4. Formulate means by which the committee may act as advisors and consultants to all groups, to school guidance departments, and the total community concerning technical and career education preparation and opportunities; and
    5. Encourage the cooperation of employers to seek applicants from among qualified youth, without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions, age, marital status, disability, genetic information or veteran status.
  2. Members/Term of Office/Appointment
    1. The membership of the committee will include approximately twenty-one (21) qualified adult members, without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions, age, marital status, disability, genetic information or veteran status. To the extent reasonably possible, members should be evenly distributed among members representing business, industry, labor, management, government, and education.
    2. The term of members shall be for three (3) years. Citizen members will be appointed by the School Board in accordance with applicable policy and regulation. Officers shall serve to the end of their tenure of office.
    3. Staff members appointed to or designated as support staff for the committee will be appointed by the Superintendent or designee and may be removed at any time by the Superintendent.
  3. Ex-Officio Members

    School personnel involved in technical and career education shall be appointed as ex-officio members of the committee and shall include the Director of Technical and Career Education, the Director of the Technical and Career Education Center, the Director of the Advanced Technology Center, the coordinator for the Governor's STEM and Technology Academy, technical and career education coordinators, and other personnel designated by the Director of Technical and Career Education. Ex-officio members shall not have voting privileges. Each School Board Committee shall have one School Board Member assigned as a liason.

  4. Meetings

    The committee shall meet quarterly or as otherwise directed by the committee's chairman.

  5. Officers/Procedures

    Officers shall be elected by the voting members. Procedures are established in the committee's bylaws.

  6. Reports

    The committee shall annually provide to the School Board a report of the work of the committee. Such report will be provided to the Superintendent or designee who will provide it to the School Board. At the committee's discretion, periodic reports and recommendations may be made to the School Board through the Superintendent or designee.

    An annual report describing the committee's activities shall be submitted to the Virginia Department of Education.
