VBCPS students outperform state on SOL tests

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) released Standard of Learning (SOL) pass rate data on Aug. 27. The overall SOL pass rates for Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) exceeded the state pass rates in all subject areas.

Virginia Beach City Public Schools Music Education Program Receives National Recognition for 16th Year

For the 16th time, Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation. Now in its 26th year, the Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement for providing music access and education to all students.

2025 Citywide Volunteers of the Year

Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) values and promotes active engagement of the community in all our schools. The Office of Family and Community Engagement coordinates many volunteer opportunities for community members to interact and contribute to the academic achievement of our students and the overall continuous improvement of VBCPS.

2025-26 federal grant information presented to Virginia Beach School Board

The Virginia Beach School Board received information about proposed federal grant applications at its May 13 meeting. For the 2025-26 school year, Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) would receive approximately $21.6 million in formula grant funds through programs authorized under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA).

COMMUNITY RELATIONS

Gifts, Grants and Bequests

This Regulation will govern gifts, grants and bequests to the School Division.

  1. Generally
    1. In-kind Donations
      1. Inquiries regarding in-kind donations will be directed to the principal/director or to the appropriate central office administrator.
      2. All accepted in-kind donations will become the property of the School Division.
      3. The principal/director or Virginia Beach Public Schools (VBPS) Education Foundation coordinator will express appreciation to the donor in written form.
    2. Monetary Donations
      1. Inquiries regarding monetary donations, gifts, grants and bequests will be directed to the principal/director or appropriate central office administrator, or to the VBPS Education Foundation coordinator.
      2. All accepted donations will become the property of the School Division or the VBPS Education Foundation.
      3. The principal/director or VBPS Education Foundation coordinator will express appreciation to the donor in written format.
  2. Instructional Materials
    1. Approval for donations of materials will be the responsibility of the principal/director or the appropriate central office administrator.
    2. Priority will be given to those items, which are on the School Division's approved list of basic and supplementary materials.
    3. Other materials will be accepted based on the following criteria:
      1. Contribution to instructional goals and objectives;
      2. Appropriateness for the age level of students;
      3. Sensitivity to the values of the community; and
      4. Approval by the appropriate central administrative office.
  3. Instructional Equipment
    1. Approval for donations of equipment will be the responsibility of the principal/director or the appropriate central office administrative office administrator.
    2. Priority will be given to those items of equipment appearing on the School Division's approved list of equipment.
    3. Other items of equipment will be judged by the following criteria:
      1. Compatibility with basic equipment;
      2. Contribution to the instructional program;
      3. Maintenance costs;
      4. Operating costs; and
      5. Installation costs.
    4. Outdoor equipment or furniture will be judged by the following criteria:
      1. Safety;
      2. Contribution to the instructional program;
      3. Effect on the appearance of school grounds;
      4. Installation costs; and
      5. Maintenance costs.
  4. Landscaping
    1. Requests to contribute plants, trees, and shrubs to school sites shall be submitted to the City of Virginia Beach, Landscape Management Division, 4141 Dam Neck Road, Virginia Beach, Virginia, 23456. The Landscape Management Division will review the request with and seek approval from the principal/director prior to accepting contributions of plants, trees, or shrubs.
    2. A plan for such contributions will be developed and include the following:
      1. A sketch of the landscaping;
      2. Discussion of preparations needed for the site;
      3. Elaboration of the planting schedule;
      4. Discussion of the suitability of the plants for the site including longevity of the plants;
      5. Maintenance costs of the landscaping; and
      6. Warranty of the plants.
    3. Completed plans will be presented to the Landscape Management Operations Coordinator at the address above for review and approval. For assistance with planning landscape projects, please call Landscape Management at 757.385.4461.
